Who Am I and What's My Background in Publishing?

My name is Susan Daffron and along with my husband James Byrd, we have written and published 10 books since 2006. We also put on the Self-Publishers Online Conference, which brings together self-publishing experts for an information-packed three days in May, so we remain current on the many changes going on in the book publishing world.

I also am the President of the Small Publishers Artists and Writers Network (SPAWN), which is a non-profit association that provides information and resources for people working in publishing. As the prez, I get to set up member teleseminars, which means I talk to publishing experts every month.

I have worked in publishing in one way or another since 1988. I have an editorial background, and before I left the cubicle and "went freelance" I worked as an editor at a publishing company where I was in charge of their books and newsletters. (Actually, in 1994, I was laying out books that were printed "on demand" before anyone was using the term.) In my freelance life, I worked as a technical editor, copy editor, and developmental editor on projects for publishing companies like Macmillan and Penton Media.

Before I self-published our 10 books, I wrote books that were published by large computer book publishers (Sams and Que). I even got an agent, and although I no longer have traditional publishing deals in the works, I know how the process works.

Our Home-Based Publishing Business

James and I always say that if we can publish books, anyone can. You see, we live pretty much in the middle of nowhere with sometimes problematic Internet connections and limited shipping options. (For a while, a certain delivery company kept telling us our road didn't exist -- Emerson would have been proud; it got kind of existential.)

But we like it this way. As "Techno-Homesteaders" we started our business in 1995 so we could move away from the city and live a simpler life amidst the forests of rural Northern Idaho. (You can read our "story" here on the Logical Expressions Web site or in this article in Redbook Magazine.) Since 1996, we have lived our dream of doing work we enjoy from a place we love.

We understand the entire book publishing process because we have gone through it ourselves. As the old saying goes, we aren't afraid to "eat our own dog food." We know what works because we've done it. (And like I said, if we can run a successful publishing business from a log cabin in the middle of a forest, anyone can do it!)
